Kermode Bear

Well its been a while since the last post...and thats related to not doing too much photography lately...But, here is a new post and some brand new pix of a Kermode Bear I encountered last week. Remember, a Kermode bear is a black bear with a recessive gene that causes the light colour. It is not an albino by any means.
Spring was fairly late up our way and so the bears were just starting to roust these last couple of weeks. This fellow came out along Highway 16 between Terrace and Kitwanga. He munched his way along the highway for a while then took off back into the bush.

He or she..has had a rough life. There is a long scar on his face and what looks to be a claw puncture would above his left eye.
This was my very first Kermode bear sighting and it was a great experience. Far more interesting than just another basic black bear sighting.

Been a while between trips, but here is a quick trip down the highway to Moricetown Falls on the Bulkley river. It is chinook salmon season and the First Nations folks are out food fishing at the falls. The river is a touch high for this time of year.

Latest trip: flyfishing at Torkelson lake

Here's some pix from a trip to Torkelson Lake last week. The cabins and mountain shot is at Chapman Lake on the drive out to Torkelson. I used my 300/2.8 with a 2x teleconverter to compress the mountains. (I think it is Netalzul Mountain in the background)
Torkelson lake is located in the area between the east side of the Babine Mountains Prov. Park and Babine Lake.
It's a fairly scenic lake with a good view of the Babines. The bugs were fierce especially in the evening...definitely headnet type stuff. Did catch a couple of small cutthroat trout, but was mainly there for the mountain backdrop.

Prince Rupert pt.2

Just a couple more pix from the trip. A colourful waterfront B & B and one of the many blacktail deer around town. Full headshots of animals isnt something we are used to....as most animals in our area are hunted so they are pretty shy of human contact (not like those National Park critters that sit for portraits all the time) This deer looked pretty conditioned to humans though and wasnt concerned at all.

Recent trip to Prince Rupert

Just had a chance to head to Prince Rupert on business and took the photo gear along, of course. I really like going down there as the drive from Smithers to Rupert has to be one of the most scenic drives in BC. Following the Skeena river most of the way with mountains rising thousands of feet on either side of the river is amazing.

The stock photo opportunites in Prince Rupert are pretty varied. The scenic shots of the Skeena are on the shooting list as are the Ridley Island industry shots, the new container terminal, the waterfront area downtown, and the usual assortment of commercial fishing boats. Rupert also has quite a population of blacktail deer....almost too many I gather as in the winter time wolves are drawn into town and have caused some concern.

I was also lucky to have sunny weather on the coast which added to the trip.Couple more pix in the next post

Mountain biking motion stock photograph

Here's another motion oriented shot. You can tell it is still late spring up here as there is not much greenery in this image yet.

Taken just hanging my 5D around my neck and cinched with a waist band....hit the self timer and start riding. Try various shutter speed/f.stop combos and see what happens.

Will also try out fill flash next time also.

Vancouver traffic light trails stock photos

Here are a few more images from my recent Vancouver trip. I like doing light trail shots of moving subjects...this time busy Vancouver traffic. The exposures were between 5 and 10 seconds. Wish I could have arrived a touch earlier to catch the 'dusk' sky rather than the pitch black sky. I feel the late dusk images look better than the total black night ones.

Gold bars concept stock photos

Here are some recent business or investment type concept images I took of small 1 ounce gold bars. The setup was fairly simple with just using a small handheld flash. The flash was shot onto a piece of white foamcore for reflection onto the gold. Seemed to work fairly well. The truly 'gold' color took some post-processing, but the out of camera results were close.

In the top image I placed the bars in a small brass balance scale I borrowed from my sons collection of misc junk.

Recent trip to Vancouver Island

A couple of weeks ago we had a family trip planned down to Vancouver Island to visit relatives. Of course, I always take along my full camera bag to take stock shots along the way.

Our trip first took us from Smithers down to Chemainus. Then we spent some time along the coast from Chemainus to Sidney.

This is quite a beautiful part of the Island and it was especially nice going from snow up north to the start of spring down on the Island.

Attached are several shots from this trip, including some of the Sidney Pier at dawn. The ferry is the small one that goes across Saanich Inlet to Brentwood Bay. The marina is Maple Bay marina.

Welcome to my stock photo blog

Hello and welcome to my new stock photography oriented blog.
As the title implies, I am a stock photographer....that is I shoot imagery on spec and place it with stock agencies for them to market.
I also do a bit of self marketing in our local area and with a few select contacts. I am planning on using this blog to highlight some of the photo projects and trips I undertake. Most will be northwest BC oriented from Prince George to Prince Rupert, but sometimes I make the odd trip further afield.

Such was the case recently with a trip down to Vancouver Island which will be the subject of post number 2 coming up.
